| ABSTRACT | Urban areas across the world face increasing traffic congestion due to rapid population growth, rising vehicle ownership, and complex mobility demands. Traffic flow and congestion analysis has emerged as a critical research domain for understanding movement patterns, monitoring roadway performance, and supporting data-driven urban planning. Modern visualization techniques, combined with advanced sensing technologies and analytical models, enable real-time assessment of traffic density, accident hotspots, and travel-time variations. This review examines key methodologies, visualization tools, and analytical frameworks used in traffic congestion studies. It highlights the integration of GIS mapping, machine learning, sensor networks, and simulation models in creating actionable insights for policymakers and transportation authorities. The paper also discusses challenges such as data heterogeneity, scalability issues, and limitations of traditional traffic models, while outlining emerging trends that have the potential to reshape future mobility systems. |
