TITLE Alcohol Sensing Alert with Engine Lock System
ABSTRACT Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be a leading contributor to road traffic fatalities and injuries across the globe. This paper presents the design and implementation of an Alcohol Sensing Alert with Automatic Engine Lock System — an embedded safety solution that autonomously detects ethanol concentration in the driver's vicinity and prevents vehicle ignition when unsafe levels are identified. The system employs an MQ-3 semiconductor gas sensor interfaced with an Arduino UNO microcontroller, a relay module for ignition circuit control, a 16×2 LCD display, and an active buzzer for real-time audio-visual alerts. Upon detecting alcohol concentration beyond a calibrated threshold, the microcontroller simultaneously activates the warning outputs and opens the relay to disable the engine, ensuring the vehicle cannot be operated. The prototype validates the technical feasibility of embedding proactive intoxication detection into standard vehicle architecture, offering a low-cost, reliable, and autonomous mechanism to support road safety and reduce alcohol-related accidents.
