TITLE An Accessible Voice-Controlled Braille Keypad for Visually Impaired
ABSTRACT Across the globe, more than 39 million people are blind, and around 285 million live with some form of visual impairment. A significant portion of this population—nearly 20 percent resides in India, highlighting the scale and urgency of the challenge. Despite the rapid growth of digital technology, access to printed and online content remains limited for many visually impaired individuals, primarily because much of it is still not available in Braille. While screen readers and audio- based applications offer some level of assistance, they cannot fully replicate the literacy, comprehension, and sense of independence that tactile Braille reading provides. To address this gap, this research introduces the Enhanced Braille Display System a low- cost, portable device designed to convert printed or digital text into tactile Braille. The system begins by using a camera to capture the text, which is then processed and enhanced using image processing techniques through OpenCV. Next, the Tesseract OCR engine is employed to extract the characters from the image. These characters are translated into Braille patterns and displayed using a solenoid array controlled by an Arduino, where pins are raised or lowered to create a tactile Braille output. In addition to touch-based reading, the system also incorporates text-to-speech synthesis, allowing users to access content through both touch and sound. Testing of the device showed encouraging results, with the OCR achieving over 90 percent accuracy and the average response time remaining under three seconds. By combining affordability, portability, and real- time functionality,System offers a practical and impactful solution to improve accessibility, education, and independence for visually impaired individuals.
