TITLE TCP Performance Optimization in Wireless Networks: Challenges and Solutions
ABSTRACT Wireless networks pose specific challenges to conventional Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) mechanisms, particularly due to the misinterpretation of non-congestion-related packet losses as congestion, resulting in inefficient performance. However, not all packet losses are caused by congestion; many are due to issues inherent to wireless links, such as multipath fading, atmospheric conditions, and interference—collectively referred to as non-congestive packet losses. Ideally, TCP should respond differently to non-congestive losses than to those caused by actual network congestion. Unfortunately, TCP lacks the capability to distinguish between these types of losses and reacts uniformly by reducing its transmission rate, regardless of the cause. This indiscriminate behavior of TCP negatively impacts throughput over wireless links. This paper explores the drawbacks of traditional TCP in wireless environments and explores several improvements, such as machine learning-based techniques, Packet loss discrimination strategies, and sophisticated queue management systems. The goal is to present an extensive review of methods for enhancing TCP performance in wireless networks.
